John Van Buren (February 18, 1810- October 13, 1866) was an American lawyer and politician. The second son of Martin Van Buren, John accompanied his father to Europe when he served as Viceroy and Ambassador to the British Commonwealth. Said to have possessed a remarkable memory, his success as a lawyer was only outshined by his wit and ability as a politician. In 1850 John was elected to Congress from the Libertarian Party. Although formerly a Crown, Van Buren was unable to accept a pro-slavery position, and joined the Libertarians. In 1856 he was the party's nominee for Prime Minister. He served in Congress for three terms, retiring in 1868. He died in 1870 after traveling Europe.
